We have to look at this historical presence of child welfare policy and what it has done to Black, American Indian and Indigenous families. There is power and impetus for real social change when there is truth telling about the historical racial terrorism in our own institutions. Since the late 1800s and early 1900s, child welfare policy and practice has been used to racially terrorize Black and Indigenous families. It was created to “fix” us as we were deemed as “problems” because of how we look, act, live and exist.
In Sacramento County, Black children make up 11% of the child population and are 36% of children in foster care. That is a problem. In Sacramento County, .5% of the child population is American Indian and make up 2% of children in foster care. That is a problem. On a national scale, 53% of Black families will be investigated by child welfare services in their lifetime.
Ifeatu Healing and Community Services is a nonprofit organization in Sacramento, CA that was created in 2019 that was created by a brother and sister who both worked in the child welfare system and desired to provide healing spaces and community supportive services to families. Our goal is to prevent the recurrence of generational trauma in the community as families are facing a child welfare system that perpetuates systemic racism.
Our services include: individual and group counseling, holistic mental health services, child welfare system navigation, housing counseling, support group for child welfare clients, meditation and healing practices and crisis intervention for families encountering child welfare services and police abuse.
Our goal is to provide ongoing supportive and community services to families harmed by the child welfare system through advocacy, community intervention, community education and building community resilience.
We are asking for your donation as funding would be used to run a pilot program, Community Family Watch, that is aimed to be an alternative to child welfare as community response would be used first rather than contacting the authorities and/or child protective services to directly combat the issue of disproportionate rates of Black and Indigenous children and youth entering foster care.
