Despite the pandemic still impacting our community, by
following health & safety precautions life
has returned to normal at the Hickok Center. Nearly all our participants have returned to
in person programming & those who have not remain committed to joining us
via Zoom activities! We have also
welcomed many new participants to the Hickok
Center Family, reinforcing the need for the services we provide &
the social interaction our participants experience as they continue to work
towards their individual goals of independence.
We continue each day to strive to achieve our mission, providing a safe &
supportive environment for adult SURVIVORS of brain injury & other neurological
challenges to design & direct their own
life journey and this year we
focused on expanding our programming options for our participants to continue doing
so!
Throughout the year we offered
additional evening & weekend programs & in November we officially
extended our daily hours & launched our Full-Time Structured Evening
Program. Our Vocational Services have
also expanded to offer pre-vocational and career exploration classes within our
Structured Day Program & with the help of a grant we were able to purchase
new Chromebooks to be used towards the development and launch of community
vocational services in 2022. While we
have had an exciting year full of changes and growth,
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT to help fund our Music Therapy Program & purchase
two Wheelchair Accessible Minibuses in the year to come.
Since 2017, the Hickok Center has
partnered with the Hochstein School of Music to offer a music therapy program
within our Structured Day Program. Hochstein
music therapists use therapeutic songwriting activities, voice lessons &
instrumental instruction to assist our participants “The Hickok Singers” to achieve their goal of creating songs, playing
instruments and singing LIVE for audiences. Our primary mission is to encourage & support our participants as they engage in self-advocacy &
self-expression interventions within the context of these music therapy
sessions. Check out our Hickok Singers
in action at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L7X17ADJrU
We also need your help with
the purchase of two Wheelchair Accessible Mini-Buses to replace the trusty “Friendship Express”, one of two vans we use almost
daily to take Day & Evening participants into the community to access &
enjoy all the wonderful recreational activities & explore the diverse
vocational field the Rochester area (and beyond) has to offer. Our “Friendship Express” has been a valued member of our Hickok Center Family for almost 20 years & has
helped us enjoy many adventures, but its retirement is long overdue.
Donate today &
help us Keep Singing our Song & Keep our
Wheels Turning!
