This program started 10 years ago because a mother could not find a recreation activity for her autistic youth. She starts off at 50 to get her level one sailing instructor certification. Then she started filing non-profit documents, so she can start a non-profit summer camp program next year. Her program started out with no equipment, but within the year she received a grant to acquire her first hobie wave sailboat to start teaching sailing off. In ten years, our sailing program has increased in number serviced by our program. In this time of uncertain, Freedom is hoping to help more youth out of their comfort zone and out on the water sailing with our program. With the funds received, our program will be able to scholarship more youth and adult out to our sailing program. In the last three years, our program has been working with Suncoast YMCA and Autism Inspired Academy, providing their group with summer camp activity for their summer. Over the last ten years our director has incorporated our students into volunteer, independent sailors, jobs and mentors. Our program has two instructors on the autistic spectrum and a sailor working on racing in regatta in the area. Our director continues to find ways to support the autistic community.
