This campaign is specifically to get this task force off the ground or in the ground should I say!  WCGNM needs funds to build a community garden that will benefit those seeking assistance through Social Services Food Bank.
WCGNM strives to implement a community garden that will be built and maintained by a coordinated group of volunteers.  Current estimates for the garden are approximately $10,000 to get a fully functional garden implemented.  This fundraiser is the first step.

In addition to the garden, WCGNM plans to work with organizations to educate recipients on food security issues, such as, in home growth of nutritious plants and veggies and implementing educational programs in coordination with Social Services.

This will help to provide nutritionally dense, seasonal foods for recipients who would otherwise not be able to purchase foods.  This enables them to utilize monies they may have for other things such as medications and utilities that they would unfortunately have to choose between those items and eating.

Food insecurity is a local issue as well as a national issue.

Statistics from the CT Food bank are as follows:

  • Nearly half a million people in the state of Connecticut are hungry.
  • That breaks down to 1 out of every 8 adults and 1 out every 6 children (140,000 children).
  • 44% of people in Connecticut who are food insecure are not eligible for Federal food assistance programs, including SNAP (food stamps) because they have income above the threshold.
  • An estimated 73% of households served reported having to choose between paying for food and utilities during the year.

New Milford's estimated population is approximately 27,000 residents.   (See Statistics from City Data Below on New Milford Poverty levels)

Approximately 4,900 people in New Milford are below the poverty line and 3,300 in the local area are hungry each week.

The New Milford Food Bank assists between 160-200 families per week.

This project will work to directly provide better quality of life for participants including seniors, children and families.
