We are a newly-formed nonprofit in search of funding.  Our mission is urgent; many of the youth we seek to serve are estranged from their families and at-risk of becoming homeless without social service interventions.  Our long-term goal is to provide transitional housing that will stabilize their lives.  But before then we seek to provide mentoring, counseling, and social service referrals (e.g., linkages to education and job training programs) that prevent them from adding to the nation's already teeming population of indigent, homeless persons.  The two geographic areas we seek to serve, Louisiana and Mississippi, are ranked second and third, respectively, in terms of their number of at-risk youth.  These youth are in great peril; between 6% and 22% of homeless girls are estimated to be pregnant, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, also, 75% of homeless or runaway youth have dropped out or will drop out of school.  We are essentially a volunteer agency at this time; the $20,000 requested in this campaign will be used to hire the street outreach staff needed to engage at-risk youth, refer them to our offices, and begin the service delivery process.  With that seed funding in place, we will begin to look for grants that allow for the expansion of services, including transitional housing, in Jackson, Mississippi and Opelousas, Louisiana, and eventually, parts of the Caribbean as well.  We are a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, so your contribution will be tax-deductible to the highest extent allowed by law.  Thank you so much for reading this, and for being willing to provide hope to our youth.

Deroll Barrett, on behalf of

Youth Improvement Services, Inc.

We are asking for $20,000 to assist youth, ages 18-24, who are in need of guidance and support in order to fully develop into purposeful, productive members of their communities. We aim to serve youth most at-risk, e.g., court-involved youth, substances abusers, and those aging out of foster care.
