The idea of the Cajun Wheelers began when my 8-year-old grandson, born with Spina Bifida, a permanent lower limb disability, wanted to play wheelchair basketball. We checked into it and the closest place was in Mississippi, approximately 4 hours away. He joined the team and loved it. After a few trips back and forth I said, "The kids in Louisiana need to have this same opportunity." So I began the process of starting a non-profit. We came into being in July 2020. We are the only wheelchair basketball team in Louisiana, and are members of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA). The most rewarding part of it all is to see the smiles on these boys and girls. When a new player comes in it is instant friendship. They learn the game of basketball in a wheelchair, how to be part of a team and their individual potential. It is such freedom for them to glide across the court in their sport wheelchairs.
Our goal as an organization is to provide the opportunity for boys and girls ages 6-13 (prep) and 14-high school graduation (varsity) to go far beyond the sport of basketball. They develop life-long friendships, build courage, experience freedom, joy and independence. We currently have 12 players from all over Louisiana; from Natchitoches, Baton Rouge, DeQuincy, Luling, and Lafayette, with a wonderful outlook of more to come. Our organization is run by volunteers who give their time and talents. We ask that you support us by helping with your monetary donation. Help us continue to provide the necessary equipment, sport wheelchairs, uniforms, and fuel to travel to and from practice and tournaments. Come follow us by watching our Cajun Wheelers on our website and Facebook and know you are a part of what makes this possible.

I realized a need to develop a youth wheelchair basketball team in the state of Louisiana. In July 2020, the Cajun Wheelers, Inc. non-profit was started. This organization has players from all over Louisiana. We work hard at providing the opportunity for the players to realize their individual potential while learning to be part of a team. We encourage an environment of growth in the knowledge of basketball while in a wheelchair for both players and coaches. It is dedicated to raising funds to continue growth of the organization.
