While growing up with a single mom who was struggling to provide for her three daughters, our founder Stephanie was able to see a small sample of the obstacles that were in her way. Then while working in childcare, and in a preschool for children with special needs she saw many more hurdles that families needed to get over just to survive.

This gave her the initial idea for Little Fish Community Center, an inclusive network of programs that would help provide support and resources to the community to help families and children thrive. After years of research and planning to create programs Stephanie found herself in need of many of the support programs she was trying to create for others.

Stephanie was struggling to find childcare, and support to help her daughters and herself flee from an abusive marriage. When she was forced to get a job or become homeless after being a stay at home mom for 6 years, and was provided no financial support from her now ex-husband, Stephanie had to barter with childcare providers and quit 2 jobs because she didn't qualify for childcare assistance because he (the husband) made too much money, even after explaining the financial abuse and that she was working to create a plan to leave him.

After getting free, Stephanie was met with more barriers because she had to leave her job and move closer to family for support. She was denied/ put on a year-long wait list for housing support because she was not considered homeless, but lived in a small 3 bedroom doublewide with her parents, grandmother, and 2 daughters. Also being denied temporary cash assistance that was needed to help pay her car payment and utilities, because job she just started meant that she now made too much money to qualify, however the job did not start for 2 weeks and the first paycheck would not received for another 2 weeks after she began working.

Our programs became so much more real and their ability to help the community was stronger. Something as simple as low or no cost childcare and having meals and diapers provided during care would make a huge difference for parents and families who are struggling. Our center will also offer volunteer opportunities and workshops to help necessary skills needed to better their situations.
