The dearth of G.E.D. programs available on Saturday in Baltimore is almost
non-existent and we believe this is our greatest advantage. Our G.E.D. preparation and training program is titled,
“Leading the Pack!” and will directly and positively impact
10 at-risk, disadvantaged youth ages 18 to 27 in Baltimore, MD. Leading the Pack! is a 5-month, Saturday only program from 9AM to 3PM.
We offer a unique approach that other traditional G.E.D. training
programs do not. While many G.E.D.
programs focus primarily on textbook teaching, we use hands-on, integrated,
disciplinary instruction and contextualized learning to build connections
across many topics so that motivation and engagement increases, but more
importantly, the style and approach helps improve learning ability. Further, evidence-based research shows that
when smaller group sizes are used, the ability to retain information is
better. Thus, we have a 1:3 teacher-student
ratio, which is another unique distinction that separates us from other
Ultimately, our platform will serve as a conduit for
post-secondary education or vocation/skill trades training aspirations –
supporting the pathway from G.E.D. to college and/or skilled trade
certification aspirations. Our
collaborative partnership with a transitional housing agency that serves former
transitional and homeless youth in Baltimore, MD was strategically formed to
address the lack of education need. Our
G.E.D. program addresses two critical needs: a) the scarcity of G.E.D. programs
available on the weekend, and 2) better employability skills and increase aptitude. Further, the partnership
will have a great cause-and-effect impact on quality of life now and in the
future of these at-risk youth in several ways: 1) obtaining a G.E.D. is seen as
a rite of passage for current and future employment opportunities; 2) employers
look at a G.E.D. as demonstrating one can follow rules and regulations as
opposed to having no G.E.D.; 3) more educational opportunities, e.g.,
many trade and vocational schools accept the G.E.D.; 4) participants will
enhance overall knowledge base and learning capacity; and 5) wage earning power
increases. Therefore, our program serves
a dual focus and purpose—literacy and economic empowerment.
