Booker T. Washington did not open its doors until 1951. For a decade and a half, Black students had their very own school. This school, like many others, need to be remembered with honor. We need this money to establish an educational foundation for the descendants of the BTW alumni. Why the urgency? The youngest of the last graduates will turn 70 years old this year. The time is now!

With this fundraiser, we hope to establish a foundation which will award scholarships, tuition assistance and or even school supplies to encourage these youth to pursue higher learning achievement. With this fundraiser, we hope to add an annex to what is left of the old school building (currently being rented to a childcare agency) to house a computer library where the youth can go to study or navigate through computers in search of knowledge rather than engulf themselves in the fantasy world of game-boys and Nintendos.

BTW it was like many desegregated schools, located in a small rural community. The population has continued to grow but very little else has. There is no movie theater within 40 miles and no McDonald's or Burger King in less than 16. I urge you... Please help keep alive the spirit which was that of BTW. Help us to attain our goals by contributing to this worthy cause. Thank you.

Law Closed Our School! Need A Marker

Mildred Mathews, on behalf of

Booker T. Washington High School, Moore Haven, FL

We need money to erect a marker where our Alma Mater once stood. Our High School like many others in the South were closed because of integration. We have nothing to show where we held great debates, sang our hearts out in the chorus or practiced beyond exhaustion in band or basketball outdoors.

Mildred Mathews

Mildred Graduated from BTW in 1962. She enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict , earned an MCS and MSW from U of D and U of M. She returned to Florida as an Adoption SpecialistTherapist and served as a Community Organizer for the Obama Campaign in the city of Clearwater.
