Special Adventures was created to make a difference in the lives of special needs adults by providing FREE, fun and safe outings. Once special needs children become adults, free activities to socialize with their peers are rare opportunities. Most special needs adults live in group homes, foster-care settings or on their own with guardian supervision. Any income earned, along with their SSI benefits is contributed as payment for their housing. This leaves them $99 per month for all of their personal needs, such as shampoo, toothpaste, clothing, etc. Some special needs adults are lucky because family members continue to visit, take them on outings and provide gifts to make their lives comfortable. Still other special needs adults are placed in warm, family environments. Sadly, so many special needs adults do not fall in either category. Most special needs adults lack the funds to enjoy the simple activities we take for granted. There are no other organizations that put on free events for this population on a monthly basis. Special Adventures hopes to fill that void by furnishing FREE events allowing special needs adults to connect with their peers in a social setting, creating a culture of inclusion. Like the rest of us, special needs adults are excited to have something special to look forward to. Their appreciation is evident and their joy is infectious. Our kickoff event was a dance with enough space for 150 special needs adults. We counted it a huge success as 144 attended. Special Adventures can only achieve its goals with the assistance of generous donations and hardworking volunteers. Without your donations, serving those in our area would not be possible. As a community, it is important to help those who cannot help themselves. It is Special Adventures mission to provide FREE, fun and safe events for these amazing individuals.
