AnimalShield is 100 % volunteer-run and works for animals in India. We were
earlier working as ‘ABFeedAStray’. Since 2017, ABFeedAStray had been providing
food and medical treatment to stray animals but I knew it wasn’t enough. I’d wanted
to help animals beyond my community so I registered my nonprofit as
AnimalShield (www.animalshield.org) to include all animal and bird species
under our mission.
Our Mission-
Shield animals in Communities- It is not about animals. It is about
all of us. If stray animals are neglected then it impacts the surroundings and
the public health. We support individuals and animal welfare groups that help
animals by providing them food and water, timely medical aid to sick and needy
animals, vaccinate and conduct spay/neuter programs to control their
population, and fund emergency cases.
Shield animals in Disasters- When hurricanes, floods,
volcanoes, and earthquakes strike a landscape, it not only impacts humans but
animals also suffer. Most of the time, animals are a source of livelihood for
people living in remote areas of affected zones. Since animals are less noticed
during the aftermath, they starve or suffer from injury or disease and
die. We work together with relief groups to protect, rescue, and care for
animals when a disaster hits.
Shield animals in the wild- We focus on two major
problems challenging wildlife today.
First, 60% of wildlife has been lost since 1970 because of Climate
Change and Habitat Destruction. Rampant deforestation of forests,
overexploitation of natural resources is being done to pave the path for animal
farming, construction of buildings and roads, etc. Moreover, as human
populations expand and habitats shrink, human-animal conflicts are increasing
in villages and small towns. We inspire and mobilize people to
change their behavior, harness their support for our campaigns, and ultimately
make a lasting impact on animals and the planet.
Second, millions of tonnes of plastic and other wastes,
are abandoned, lost, or discarded annually in sea impacting hundreds of
marine animals, including whales, seals, turtles, and birds, that routinely
become entangled in abandoned wastes. We persuade the public to become
strong supporters of marine animals and help local groups to
remove plastic from our oceans and beaches. We identify and drive the
solutions that will reduce and remove plastic from our oceans and rescue
millions of marine animals.
Spread awareness about animal abuse happening in
entertainment, sports, food, testing, fashion, puppy mills industries.
The consumer demand for animals' related entertainment experiences, exotic
pets, trophies, or luxury products made from animals, is growing rapidly. This
demand is often motivated by a love for animals and a lack of awareness of
their suffering, but when people know about the cruelty involved they change
their behaviors. Our choices define the lives of millions out
there. We educate people about their plight and encourage them to choose wisely
and responsibly.
As we work towards our goals, the expenses are also
increasing. The last few months have been tough, because of the COVID-19
lockdown, the count of animals we’ve been feeding has increased. We can’t
neglect an animal when we know he is starving from hunger. We need money to continue
doing what we do. Every month, we have to buy food, pay our cook, staff who drive to all areas to feed animals, get medicines, spay-neuter, and do emergency rescues.
We’ve already fed more than 500 animals so far. We continue to
feed stray animals in areas of Dwarka, Delhi, and Kharar, Punjab.
We’ve provided life-threatening care to more than 100
animals so far and basic medical care to a countless number of street animals.
We understand the importance of spay-neuter, hence, most of the
street animals who we feed are spayed. We’re now going to take a big step and
starting July we’re going to create puppy-free zones. We’re going to select an
area and spay-neuter all stray animals living there.
Winters in Northern India can be cruel, it is hard not to
think about how difficult it is for stray animals who have no way to escape the
cold when winter rears its ugly head. We’ve so far provided warmth to 110
animals through 50 coats, 45 blankets, 2 tarps, and numerous jute bags.
We partnered with other welfare groups to protect, rescue,
and care for animals in Orissa when cyclone Fani struck India’s east coast last
year.
We partnered with other welfare groups to provide food for
those in need, person, or animal when super cyclone Amphan struck India’s
east coast this year.
