When I was diagnosed with stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer and given 3-5 years to live, I became determined to get a van and travel while I was still able to. In March, I let go of the place I had been living and made plans to go to WA for alternative treatment. Then the coronavirus hit and my plans fell through. Luckily, I stayed with my daughter until I was able to buy a minivan, using the government stimulus money. For $1200, I bought a 91 Ford Aerostar, which provided a blank slate for me to create a home from a cargo van and start my journey. Or so I had thought...
Unfortunately, the virus continues and like so many of us, it has caused an upheaval of my plans, as well as increasing expenses, therefore, stunting the progress of the conversion of my home. I am slowly doing work on my van, whilst living in it, and I’ve either found some things for free or had some items gifted to me, but there are still basics needed to make the van a functioning home
I have realized it is time to ask for help from my friends, family and community so that I can have a home that is suitable for a person with a disease as dibilitating as I have. It has been over a year and a half since the first fundraiser that was held for me and I am in greater need of help than ever. Not only do I still require help with my supplements, alternative treatments, a diet that supports my health and other day to day expenses, I now have the issue of needing to create a stable, secure, safe and healthy home. I have researched financial assistance for folks on disability and/or with stage IV cancer, both private and public, and other than social security, which I receive the minimal amount, there is nothing. I am in a dire situation, that leaves nothing extra for the budget I need for my home, let alone any other extras.
However, I have been able to get quite a lot of work done on the van, both mechanical and interior but there are some essential items still needed. I will apply any funds raised to purchasing a portable toilet, an auxiliary battery and inverter, a washing system for both body and dishes, more memory foam for bedding, an alarm system, a jump box, privacy shades, proper storage for my belongings and replacing the potentially hazardous carpet with an alternative. Should I be able to raise anything extra, I will save for the travel I had originally planned on
I know that these times are challenging for everyone and so many of us are out of work, and/or struggling to make life seem “normal.” If you can donate to my cause, you will be supporting my living situation, housing, and health and wellness. No amount is too small, all donations are appreciated and please share this campaign!
Thank you for the support.
