In February, the Department of Labor closed the doors on the Kicking Horse Job Corp. Security was left in place until May 31, 2019. Mark is a security officer and will be out of a job on May 31. He enjoys being a security officer and has dreamt about starting his own security company. Mark will be the companies Resident Manager; he has 15 years of experience as a Police Officer and Armed Security Officer. He has completed the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and currently has an Armed Security Officer Card. His experience as an officer will give him insight on who to hire and the training needed to be successful.
At this same time at a local town meeting, business owners showed concern over the up rise on crime in the downtown area. Many owners had stories that include car break-ins, shoplifting, and loitering. According to Downtown Polson business owners, “We are fearful downtown and that's an issue." The meeting focused on identifying ways to curb crime from installing more outside lighting and security cameras to hiring nighttime security officers.
Deciding what to do about the financial loss they will have, Mark and Dyan chose to take the risk and start their own security company. Downtown Polson needs security and Mark needs to provide for his family. It seems a win-win for all.
Doing the research to see if security officers are needed and the company would be feasible, they turned to the Polson City Police Department. While speaking with Captain Alan Booth, he stated the police budget cannot handle the overtime needed for all events that come to town and security are what is needed in Polson.
Mark and Dyan have been working on starting the business. Dyan has an Associate of Applied Science Administrative Assistant and will be focusing on setting up the office, working closely with clients. She also has an Associate of Applied Art Media Design which will help with marketing and web services. Dyan has researched what would be needed, applied for an IRS -EIN, Montana License, and created the website. They are requesting $33,000 to purchase a Jeep Renegade for security patrol and pay for general liability insurance.
