For 25 years Streetlights, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, has been redressing the inequity of race behind-the-camera on the sets of Feature Films, Television and TV Commercials. As a Job Training, Job Placement and Career Advancement organization, our mission is to create careers, not just jobs, for economically and socially disadvantaged young minority men and women while increasing ethnic diversity in the Entertainment Industry.
Targeting the hardest hit neighborhoods of Southern California, all of Streetlights' participants are either severely low-income wage earners or at poverty level. When participants first graduate from the Streetlights Training Program, we provide placement into entry-level jobs as Production Assistants (P.A.s) – a traditional place to get your foot in the door and work your way up.
All students begin with the Production Assistant Program. It is the only entry-level production training of its kind, requiring each student to complete 240 hours of job preparation, 120 of which are spent working on actual paid productions. Taught by Industry professionals, the aspiring Production Assistants learn skills that allow them to be of true assistance to the production companies from their very first day on the jo
Our most senior P.A.s take advantage of Career Advancement services through the Commercial Diversity Initiative (CDI). This important initiative offers qualified, experienced P.A.s the chance to make that difficult move up the career ladder to Union Membership. At the same time, it is building a much-needed Industry-wide minority talent pool, representing a range of job categories: from Gaffer to Grip; from Producer to Prop Maker; from Set Designer to Director.
As a service to the many production companies contacting us to hire skilled workers, Streetlights maintains an up-to-date roster of graduates that enables us to readily fill the job requests we receive with the most appropriate crew member/employee for the job.
Funding directly benefits students by paying for appropriate work clothing, groceries, partial payment toward unexpected doctor or childcare bills, or help with small emergency car repairs (tire, battery, etc.). Funding will also help pay for gas to and from training, and lunch, often the only meal they eat that day.
The beauty of Streetlights lies in its simplicity and convenience. Companies hire men and women they would need to hire anyway. As a bonus, these companies have an opportunity to help them build a bright future not only for themselves, but for their families as well.
There is no easy solution to this community’s problems, but the best solution is still a job.
