In 2016, destructive winds and rains of Hurricane Matthew devastated the City of Lumberton, NC with massive flooding. Arrested Potential, Inc.'s After-school Tutorial and Computer Lab for at-risk children, located in Lumbee Homes Public Housing Development, was forced to close its doors for most of its inventory of computers, supplies and décor were lost in the aftermath of the storm. The computers that normally drew more than thirty children to the lab, the bean bags that found these children lounging as they read books, and the study carrels that once had students engaged in active learning, were now damaged beyond repair. The total cost of the children could not be measured in emotional and physical displacement, and the loss of a safe and welcoming learning environment - the computer lab was even more painful. It took over a year to secure a new location in another public housing development community center and fundraising efforts and donor solicitations to replenish lost inventory. Then in 2018, a week before the scheduled Grand Opening of  Arrested Potential, Inc.'s After-school Tutoring and Computer Lab, in Turner Terrace Public Housing Community Center, Hurricane Florence destroyed a portion of the roof.  Suddenly, the project was faced with the wrenching process that two storms had destroyed within two years. The staff and volunteers of  Arrested Potential, Inc. realized that this recovery would be challenging, but not impossible.  We strongly believe that this project gives at-risk children a safe, creative and engaging learning environment where they can improve their academic and computer skills, and is worthy of donations from people who understand the importance of bridging the gap of education through computer technology.

No educational support mechanism, outside the school. The participants, at-risk children, reside in public housing that is replete with inter-generational poverty and crime. The project provides a safe and engaging learning environment for tutoring, computer technology and STEM activities.
