Smart Start is North Carolina's nationally recognized initiative to ensure that every NC child reaches his/her full potential and is prepared to succeed in a global community. smart Start helps working parents pay for childcare, improves the quality of childcare, and provides health and family support services in every county of North Carolina.
Craven Smart Start's mission is "Building Brighter Futures for Young Children". There are a number of programs in our foundation that may be viewed from our website; www.cravensmartstart.org. These programs only touch the tip of our love and care for young children. Monies are distributed from the state to each county based on population and formula. All other programs rely on private donations and support from the community. The Baby Expo is an event that begins as infants and moms leave the hospital with educational materials. The Baby Expo is an event that begins as infants and moms leave the hospital with educational materials concerning not only our foundation but all other agencies and businesses that may be available in the county to assist these babies.
Parents are invited to sign up for their new infant to receive a monthly book in the mail for the next five years. Literacy is important for babies as they grow and learn prior to reaching preschool. 70% of our budget goes for subsidized childcare including funding for the county schools' PK classes. Other literacy programs include "Raising a Reader" and "Reach Out and Read".
Craven Smart Start also focuses on childcare facilities including home centers in 6 eastern NC. counties. Our WAGES program supplements the salaries of underpaid childcare workers and also pays for workers to attend college for additional childcare training.
The Baby Expo is an event to reach out to the community with a focus on infants and toddlers. It is held in the spring inviting all child-related agencies and businesses to attend and share information with the public. Like any other major conference, funding is needed for renting the facility, setting up booths, and advertising expenses. We are asking for donations that are tax deductible for you and go a long way in helping us to help others. This is our YouHelp fundraiser for this spring 2023. It is our open invitation to you to assist us with the Baby Expo or go online and make a donation to other Craven Smart Start programs of your choice. I also invite you to come to our office and visit the Lending Library. This library is set up with educational toys and supplies that parents may check out for teaching their young children or just come to play in the centers.
